sarah simmons this morning. you know, you expect this to happen because you told us about it. but still, it's like no! we liked that couple of days. >> it is kind of like the lunch bag letdown. you are a kid, you open your lunch bag and it's like oh, not what i thought. >> mother nature whipped them in and whipped them out. bundle up if you are heading out. it is seriously chilly out there. we have a few high clouds to the north and west of us but other than that, we are expecting clear conditions and lots of sunshine today. ridge of high pressure is in control and that will set us up for sunshine. yesterday's highs, 63 at reagan national airport. 61 at dulles and 64 at bwi thurgood marshall. temperatures will be some 20 degrees or so cooler than that into the course of today and actually, even with our high today, we will be below the seasonal average. the 70s are long gone. so don't expect them anymore. here is a look at where we

stand right now. 30 at dulles. 2 at bwi thurgood march marshall. winds are light. they will remain that way throughout the course of the day. our high today, expected to be 36 degrees. no shortage of sunshine. you will have plenty of that. it will be chilly and the wind will be light. do prepare yourself. up fortunately, it is here to stay for the day. we have some changes coming up in our weekend forecast as well and i'll have the details later on. >> at least we have some sunshine. >> that's it. you can't have it all. >> we'll take it. that's fine. thank you. let's go to julie wright with the latest on this morning's traffic woes. >> not only do we have sunshine but we have pineapple. thankfully, no one was injured in this incident and sky fox is live above the scene of what we're talking about. the outer loop of the beltway right here at the decision point if you are going to go northbound on 270 or continue around the outer loop of the beltway over towards old georgetown road. this is where we have the crash and it involved a tractor-

trailer which nipped over on its side. its contents, pineapple. they are in the process of offloading that pineapple as we speak. the right lane of the beltway remains closed as you continue westbound around 495. you can see the crews out here trying to clean up this mess. this will be with us throughout our morning commute. let's start planning ahead of what we can do to make the commute a little easier for you. typically, it is already slow from 95 headed through silver spring. not going to take long for all of this to become one continuous delay. here is the truck overturned on its side. as you can see, right lane remains closed on the beltway as you continue around towards old georgetown road and making your way to the american legion bridge. your options at this time, the icc, that is open for you. also randolph road north of the beltway and 410, the east-west highway south of 495, all viable workarounds for you. northbound 39 5, the early morning incident off the road to the shoulder. traffic it is heavy traveling up towards seminary road. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. e traffic.

>> thank you. a scary find inside a fairfax county school after a gun is found inside a student's locker. >> the school insists that no students were ever in danger. fox 5's melanie alnwick is live at robinson secondary school with the latest on this investigation. >> this is a very large school here. it comprises a middle school and high school. so far, we don't know the age or the grade of the student or students who were involved in this incident. school officials say they are taking it very seriously and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken. still, this many, many questions that the school community would like to have answered. it was administrators at the school who found the gun in the student's locker. now, investigators say there was an ammunition magazine in the weapon but they didn't release any other details about what led school officials to the locker. a letter edmonton mailed to parents by the school principal says there will be severe consequences for the infraction. it also refers to more than one

student involved saying, quote, the suspects involved have been identified and questioned. now, parents were notified using fairfax county school system's e-mail alerts but it doesn't sound like students were told at the school until they got home. many did hear it new rumor and some parents felt the school did take appropriate action. >> actually, i think i was very relieved that they dealt with it as well as they did. it sounds like it was caught quickly and the situation was dealt with and the kids were kept safe. so i think it is a pretty safe school. >> reporter: some parents were a bit more rattled. a lot of them have more questions. they want to know what was the age of the student and they want to more more about how many students were involved, what kind of gun was it and what was the reason the gun was in the locker. some of those answers are still unclear. we haven't gotten that clarified either by the fairfax county school system or by fairfax county police. if we hear anything new, we'll

let you know. >> all right. thank you very much. and we have a news alert on syria now. u.s. officials say the syrian military has loaded active chemical weapons into bombs and is just waiting a final order from embattled president bashar assad to use the deadly weapons against it is syrian people. there are reports that the army is preparing sarin gas that could be deployed from airplanes. if the regime does fall, the worry is that the weapons of mass destruction could fall into the hands of terrorists. could it be a sign that the stalemate in the fiscal cliff talks could be resolved soon. wednesday, president obama spoke with john boehner and eric cantor says the gop is ready to, quote, talk specific. if an agreement is not reached, defense employees will take a

hard hit. almost half of the automatic cuts that would take effect will impact the department of defense and civilian employees are expected to be first to feel it. new this morning, the duchess of cambridge is out of hospital and as we see in this video, just in to the newsroom, she and prince william were seen leaving about 0 minutes ago to head to kensington palace. the couple is expecting their first child and kate had been hospitalized for severe morning sickness. her stay in the hospital was uneventful except for a prank call by a pair of australian dj is pretrending to be the queen and prince charles. same-sex couples in washington state line up to say i do and the state rolls out a controversial new law that legalizes smoking pot in private. >> a software giant arrested. john mcafee is at the center of an investigation into his neighbor's murder. that is not why he was taken into custody. we'll explain when fox 5 morning news continues.  welcome t to chevys year-end event.

the guatemalan foreign ministry hasn't decided whether to send john mcafee back to belize. he was arrested for illegally entering country. he was a person of interest in the november killing hi neighbor in belize. mcafee says he fears for his safety in belize pause he has sensitive information about official corruption. later today in new york ache funeral will be held for the map who was killed after getting pushed on to the subway tracks and we are learning more about what happened right before that incident. the man's wife says they had an argument earlier in the day and he had been drinking. police say he had an empty antibioticful vodka on him when he was killed. as best they can tell, the homeless man accused of pushing him was bothering people and he confronted him, telling him to stop. that is when the argument broke

out and mr. han was killed. a couple of high profile and controversial laws are now in effect in washington state. same-sex couples can now legally get married. many people wasted little r the time and lined occupy outside a seattle administering building shortly after the governor signed the law yesterday. the law legalizing marijuana possession also went into effect in washington state. adults can have up to one ounce of pot but it is still banned from public use just like drinking alcohol. coming up next, remembering a jazz legend who helped bring the art form to the masses with a hit that can just about put anybody in a good mood. >> but first, we'll have today's forecast that will also make you feel good as we listen to some of that music. we'll check in with gwen when fox 5 morning news continues. q

what you can expect. we do have plenty of sunshine today. there is a ridge of high pressure that is actually building in and that is going to give us a lot of sun into the course of the day today. we had a lot more clouds yesterday. however, things improved and we are very grateful that we are going to see at least some bright skies so not bad at all. it will be much cooler. we are auctioning about below average temperatures today. the last for you days, we've been well above seasonal. -- we are talking about below average temperatures today. here is a look at our sky conditions. a few clouds to the north, a few to the west but other than that, fairly clear conditions today across the entire area. that ridge of high pressure is going to do its job with the sunshine. chilly start to your day. bundle up if you are heading out. 28degrees at gaithersburg. 23 at frederick. 30 at dulles. 35 at d.c. and 27 degrees at both winchester and cumberland. up the mid-atlantic, we have 30

for boston and 30 degrees for new york city. 4 34 to the south in roanoke. today's current temperatures, 35 at d.c. 30 at dulles and 28 at bwi myrrh shall. we are actually a lot cooler than we were yesterday at this time. winds are calm. we had gusty winds and wind chills yesterday as well. that is another factor we don't have to deal with. so that ridge of high pressure in control keeping up the sunshine. it will be cool and chilly as we move through into the course of tomorrow. looks like we'll see showers as we head through into sunday. 46 for today and then sunny skies and chilly. and tonight, 36 degrees. a little bit cooler in the suburbs. prepare for that. we creep into the 60s by the time saturday comes around. that looks great. however, a few showers for your sunday and monday before we get back to dry conditions on tuesday into wednesday. temperatures just rising ever so slightly. another tease from mother nature. >> absolutely.

all right. on the roads this morning, it started off around 2:00. the trt overturned on its side loaded with pineapple. we are continuing to clean this up with the crew in sky fox hovering above. thank you, chopper brad. outer loop of the beltway here at the decision point to go northbound on 270 or continue around the capital beltway. that is where this wreck occurred. you will find the right lane remains closed. the right lane will be closed throughout the morning drive because of this ongoing cleanen up. there were boxes of pineapples on this truck. they have to move the truck out of your way. typically, the outer loop slows from 59 to georgia avenue. not going to take long for this delay to connect to the backup already forming at 355 headed westbound around the beltway. so while you are grabbing that cup of joe, think ahead. what can i do to get around it. the icc is a viable option, randolph road, 410. you do not want to get stuck on the top stretch of the beltway. it looks look they are pulling up some tow trucks here.

this is going to slow down your ride this morning. we had business 5 over at mattawoman beantown road and we had the crash at duke street. lanes are open once again headed out towards shirlington. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> thank you. very sad to hear this news yesterday. music legend dave brubeck has passed away. he helped bring jazz to the masses with the hit song being take five. it came from the 1959 album, time out. the first jazz album to sell one million copies. his music broke barriers as he toured in countries in the middle east and the soviet union. he was awarded alive time achievement grammy in 1996 and wads name a kennedy center honoree in 2009. he died yesterday in norwalk, connecticut. he would have turned 92 today. great music.

you may soon start to see even more starbucks on the corners. we'll have more on that in just a moment. let's take a look at the markets. lauren simonetti is live in new york with this morning's business beat. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> let's talk about the dow takes a jump and nasdaq takes a slump. what is going on here? >> well, the dow and the s&p rallied for the first time this week yesterday and they are up again this morning. so there is the good news. but the nasdaq hay big problem. that was apple. a six plus percent decline in apple shares. that was the biggest decline in four years. that weighed on the tech heavy nasdaq. issue right now is a research report saying that its market share of the global tablet market will fall to below 50% by 2016 as android becomes more popular. that is one of the things that weighed on investors yesterday. >> also, we want to talk about this. starbucks, it seems like they are already everywhere.

how is it possible they could put more stores anywhere else? >> if they are strategically located, it will work. remember during the reserks we started to see starbucks close down. i never actually saw a starbucks close down but i read about it. now, they are bringing a lot of the stores back in different areas. starbucks says their gnaw cafes bring in more money than existing ones. so they are putting them in the right places. when people go into a starbucks, they typically just buy a drink. they don't buy food and a drink. starbucks is looking to get to you buy both. we need that $450 gift card. >> oh, yeah. we got it. thank you very much. >> have a good day. a good day. coming up later this hour, we are live on the ellipse with a preview of this year's

is all changing now. our high today at 46 degrees. >> very good. thank you, ma'am. >> now, time to check traffic. >> big story this morning, the overturned tractor-trailer still on its side as you make your way over towards the exit for northbound 270. this accident occurred around 2:00 a.m. this morning at the decision point to go northbound on 270 or continue with the outer loop of the beltway. chopper brad showing us the big delay forming on the outer loop coming out of bethesda towards this scene. they have to offload the truck and get the truck back up on its wheels so they can get it on its way. this portion of your commute will remain closed throughout the morning drive. the icc is a viable option for you. you don't have to have a pass for that. they will send you a bill in the mail. that will work for you as well as randolph road or even 410, the east-west highway. this is at the decision point

at robinson secondary school. they want to know what kind of gun it was and why it ended up in a student's locker. it was administrators at the school who discovered the gun in the locker. investigators say there was an ammunition magazine in the weapon but didn't release any details. they haven't said anything about the age, gender or grade level of student who had the gun a letter was e-mailed to parents by the school principal and said scherr taking this situation seriously and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken, calling it severe consequences. the letter also refers to more than one student involved saying the suspects have been identified and questioned. parents were notified using the county school system's e-mail alert but it sounds line students weren't told until necessity got home. >> i have a seventh grader who didn't know what had happened. my tenth grader had heard but it was dealt with so quickly

this morning in a new diplomatic effort to end that war. here at home, president barack obama spoke on the phone with house speaker john boehner on avoiding the fiscal cliff. but boehner as facing a growing backlash among rank and file republicans. some say they will never support tax hikes but others are breaking with the leadership saying they will support the president's demand for an increase on rates on upper incomes. new this morning, more support for a push to crack down on texting while driving in virginia. legislation is in the works that would classify texting behind the wheel as reckless driving. the virginia state crime commission has announced its support for the measure. it is not expected to be taken up until early next year. ext y time now not morning line and everybody is talking about

and there. 55 at fredericksburg. 51 at manassas. overall, the temperatures will remain into the 40s below seasonal with that ridge of high pressure building in. achilly start to the day but the sun will be around all day long. we'll keep our eye on the frontal system as we head through into the beginning of weekend. that will set us up for a chance of see something showers as we head through into the sunday period. here is a look at your thank you time highs warming up a little bit by saturday into the low 60s. not bad at all. a little bit of a moisture lift expected into the course of tonight as well. that could mean a little bit of precipitation over the potomac high lands and the west virginia panhandle. we'll watch that. if it gets cold enough tonight, they could see i little bit of freezing rain. but other than that, things will stay calm throughout the period. period. >> very good. calm and cold. >> right. >> guess what it is time for.
